Natural Motion Sickness Aids

Ginger has been used since ancient times in Arabic, Asian, and Indian herbal traditions as a medicine. Known as the underground stem, or rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale has served as an aid for nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea for over two thousand years. Ginger has also been suggested in studies to reduce the symptoms that accompany motion sickness. For example, sailors who took powdered ginger were less likely to end up with cold sweats and vomiting than sailors who took a placebo. The most common theory is that ginger has active chemical compounds called gingerols and shogaols that are thought to detoxify gastric substances that lead to nausea. Gingerols are the most aromatic compounds in ginger, a shoot-like plant that has a thick room from which it originated, and shogaols are said to be formed during the drying process.

Mentha piperita, or mint, has been used for centuries to get rid of indigestion, heartburn, and nausea and continues to be used as an herbal remedy for motion sickness today. Mint is most commonly known for relieving the symptoms of digestive disorders such as diverticulosis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Most often used in food and medicine, its effectiveness has demonstrated so much success as a motion sickness aid and symptomatic relief to stomach problems that researchers continued to study it. It was also found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties, which assist in healthy digestion due to relaxation of the digestive tract and stimulation of the natural flow of digestive bile and juices. Native to western Asia and the Mediterranean, it was early settlers who brought mint to America to use primarily for medicinal purposes.

Kalium phosphate, also known as kali phos, has been called a natural tranquilizer and has many benefits, one of them being the relief of an upset or nervous stomach. A biochemic tissue salt, kalium phosphate, or potassium phosphate, is known for its effectiveness in treating anxiety and stress. Because it has been identified as one of the twelve essential salts for the body, its natural properties provide nutrients to the body's nerves. It is already present in the nerve tissue and brain cells and serves as a natural antiseptic.

Pulsatilla vulgaris C30 is a homeopathic remedy for nausea and vomiting, which often accompany travel sickness, and is commonly used as a motion sickness aid. It soothes the need for fresh air and to get out of the closed space.

Cocculus C30, another homeopathic remedy, is also best known for relieving vertigo, nausea, and vomiting, or the trio of symptoms that come with motion sickness.
